Ep 13 - Dennis the Menace
Dennis Kucinich is considered a political outsider, but this unabashed progressive has been involved at almost every level of government for 50 years. With strong ties to Ohio, he has served as City Councilman, Clerk of the Municipal Court, Mayor, State Senator and U.S. Representative. In 2004 and 2008, he ran for the Democratic nomination for President and pushed his strong brand of liberalism on the national stage. He has shown throughout his career that he's willing to stand up for his principles, including against members of his own party. In fact, the Democratic platform has never quite defined the Congressman. From being one of the first proponents for universal health care to now supporting President Trump's trade policies, the Congressman has always taken his own path.
Now, Dennis Kucinich is eyeing the Governor's Mansion in Ohio as he faces a full field for the Democratic nomination, including Richard Cordroy, the former head of the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau, Joe Schiavoni, minority leader in the Ohio Senate, and Bill O'Neill, former Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. With the primary election only weeks away, the polls are tight. While most considered Richard Cordroy the front-runner when the race began, the Congressman's message seems to be resonating with Ohio voters and Democrats looking to redefine the party.
As Democrats search for new messaging after losing heavily in 2016, the race for Governor in Ohio is a true test for the future of the party.
